I called a company, called Metro Pacific Moving and Storage. Later on, I found out that there are several companies, affiliated with this one, that operate in the same manner. One of them is called Lindsay Movers, and the other is called GTA moving.
They were advertising on Craigslist, saying that they were the "reliable, honest, flat rate movers". The prices quoted were $30/hr for one guy with truck, and $40/hr for two guys with truck.
Being low on funds, I agreed to hire one guy with a truck for $30 per hour. I guess I must have sounded like a tough customer on the phone, because I asked a lot of questions to ensure that I would not be defrauded.
I made it quite clear that I would have a friend helping us, and that he would be watching the truck at all times. I also made it clear that I would only pay once the truck was unloaded at the destination, and that I would be asking for ID (Driver's license) of anyone that showed up at my door.
I also asked for a contract in writing before starting any work.
Well, we agreed to a price and terms. However, the night before the move, the person called me up, and told me that the price would be increasing, to at least double what he originally quoted me.
He explained that it is expensive for him to lease a truck, etc. He then said that it was his company policy to ask for 50% of the money before loading the truck, and the remaining 50% before unloading the truck.
He told me that he knows I am planning to move tomorrow morning.
I told this person to get lost. I called several other moving companies, and when I talked tough to them, I found out that they would do similar things to me upon loading my merchandise.
So, I reserved a U-Haul, and called a few friends to check with their friends, and within an hour had my own "Moving Company" arranged.
The total price I paid was less then half of what I would have paid had I gone with the scammers.
And, I had 2 people helping me, who I could trust. I felt secure in having a truck which I had complete control over.
